Welcome to 2019, Magic City Blues Society members - our 26th year! As usual for early in the year, the MCBS does not have much going on to start with. Open Jams at Ranelli’s on the first Friday of the month, and at Brennan’s on the 3rd Thursday of the month.

Our annual Birthday Bash will take place at the January Brennan’s Open Jam on Jan 17th. In addition to the music, the MCBS will have elections for new board members and new board officers. After several years, I’ve decided to take some time off from board membership. Todd Eckstrom, long time board member, has graciously volunteered to run for President of the MCBS. As usual, we’re looking for any additional volunteers to serve on the board, or to jump in and get involved in any way you may see fit – we need a new merchandise manager, too!

There are a few musical events of interest coming up – Southern Avenue will be at Zydeco on January 12, and Robert Kimbrough Sr. is playing a BlueStages show on February

CD Review - Tinsley Ellis
Published on: 2/10/2018
Tinsley Ellis has a 30 year career in the Blues and just released his 19th album (the fifth in five years!), returning to his home at Alligator Records from his own label “Heartfixin.” The result is an excellent rocking blues album with such an emphasis on electric guitar that the liner notes say which of his five favorite classic guitars is featured.

Our BOBB winners did us proud in Memphis. Both Chris Simmons and John Bull made the semifinals. About half of the bands and solo/duos were eliminated in the quarter finals, so our entrants were in the top 50%. They didn’t make the finals, but only eight bands and eight solo/duos ended up making the cut out of about 200 entries.
