The Magic City Blues Society is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was founded on January 10, 1993. At that time, there was a small group of people who wanted to do more to bring the blues to Birmingham.
It all came together at about the same time that the citizens of the community living under the shadow of the world’s largest iron statue, Vulcan, protested the bare butt that Vulcan so proudly displayed.
Our first vice-president, Scott Fuller, also a graphic artist extraordinaire, designed the now infamous logo with the back shot being of Vulcan’s famous butt, hence the “Nothing Butt the Blues” slogan.
For information concerning event sponsorship, co-producing or other forms of support, please contact the board at email@example.com.
The purposes of the society are:
- to encourage the performances of the blues;
- to encourage the preservation of the blues;
- to develop an appreciation of the blues within the community; and
- to participate in other charitable civic, literary, or cultural activities within the community consistent with the purposes stated above.
Blues music is very much a part of Southern life and history, deserving recognition as a valid and historical folk art form. The Society hosts a variety of events throughout the year, bringing in national acts as well as supporting our local musicians.
From events like the Junkyard Juke; the Phelan Park Music Series; the Blues Ball; and BlueStages, our house concert series, the Magic City Blues Society is working hard to promote our mission to preserve the blues.
Our annual Canned Jam provides a forum for any musician to get up and play while raising donations for local charities. We also host acoustic and electric open jams, mainly at our loyal friends at Ranelli’s Deli. The jams welcome any level of talent and mentoring and networking opportunities.
Each year we hold a Battle of the Blues Band contest to send a band and solo/duo act to the International Blues Competition, held annually in Memphis, TN. This allows us to showcase our finest coming out of the ’Ham.
The Magic City Blues Society is keepin’ the Blues alive in the ’Ham — Nothin’ Butt the Blues!
