Who We Are!!!
The Magic City Blues Society is a 501 (c ) (3) organization that was founded on January 10, 1993. At that time there was a small group of people who wanted to do more to bring the Blues to Birmingham. It all came together at about the same time that the citizens of the community living under the shadow of the world’s largest iron statue, Vulcan, protested the bare butt that Vulcan so proudly displayed.
Today, the membership of the Magic City Blues Society has grown from a select few to over 100. And if you are reading this and not a member, WE WANT YOU!!! The purposes of the Magic City Blues Society are, and not limited to:
To encourage the performance of the BluesTo encourage the preservation of the BluesTo develop an appreciation of the Blues within the communityTo participate in other charitable, literary, or cultural activities within the community consistent with the purposes of the Society.
Blues Music is very much a part of Southern life and history, deserving recognition as a valid and historical folk art form.
The Society hosts a variety of events throughout the year, bringing in national acts as well as supporting our local musicians. From events like Junkyard Juke, the Phelan Park Music Series, the Blues Ball, and Blues Stages (our house concert series), the Magic City Blues Society is working hard to promote our mission to preserving the Blues.
And as for Vulcan, he still proudly watches over our city with a bare butt!
The Magic City Blues Society is keepin’ the Blues alive in the ‘Ham – Nothin’ Butt the Blues!!!!

Salutations fellow Blues Lovers.
Hope everyone is safe and happy during these strange times.
I am happy to report that we had a small socially distanced very enjoyable event at the Shelby County Arts Council with Jontavious Willis and Jay Hopp. They put on a great show and we look forward to great things from both of them in the future. The next day they went down to Union to perform with Jock and Clarence. We only had 25 people there, but it was still live, down home blues music. I would also like to thank Bruce Andrews and his staff for working with the MCBS and allowing us to use his incredible venue. Here is a link, worth your time to listen.
Speaking of Jock and Clarence they were recently featured on a Facebook event held by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts. It’s nice to see our local talent recognized on a national level. You can check it out here:
I would also like to give a shout out to our own Francesca, she is producing some Blues Talks with various artists as live Facebook feeds. She has featured Misty Blues, longtime friends of the Magic City Blues Society. As a result of her contacts in Italy some of Misty Blues music has been featured on Italian Blues Radio. This past week she had our own Regi Yarbrough as a guest. He is a past winner of the Battle of the Blues Bands, a current MCBS Board member and music teacher in the Bessemer School District. If you would like to suggest an artist for her to present please feel free to reach out.
The continuing bad news is that the IBC for Jan 2021 has been canceled. While nobody likes it, it is for everyone’s safety. Due to this development the MCBS will not be holding a Battle of the Blues Bands this year. We look forward to getting back on track soon.
Looking forward - save the date for Friday November 20th. The Board of Directors is working on an event on this date, more info to come soon.
We are also looking for any homes with a large back yard so we can maybe have a Bluestages event and still be able to distance from each other. Safety before fun. If you or anybody you know is interested in hosting a small event please let us know.
As always thanks for supporting the MCBS and Live Music.
PLEASE WEAR YOUR MASK we want to get back to normal sooner than later.
