From the Prez

There are all kinds of things happening over the next two weeks in the Birmingham Blues world, Magic City Blues Society members!

Let’s start off with an update on the upcoming Battle of the Blues Bands at Iron City on July 22. Musicians, as always, the time frame to enter ends on either July 15 (one week before the show) or when we reach ten (10) entries – and we are currently at eight (8) – so if you are debating whether to participate, time is running out! And listeners, head to to get your tickets and read up on the day.

The Shelby County Shindig is this weekend – featuring the duo of John Bull and Ed Pickett (last year’s winner of our BoBB, by the way,) The Little G Weevil Band (winner of the 2013 IBC!!!) and the Arretta Woodruff Revue. Check out the link at to find out all the specifics.

While not a dedicated MCBS event, I’m real excited to see Fantastic Negrito at Saturn on July 18. Despite winning the 2017 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album, he’s not really a household name and he’s certainly coming a long way from his home base of Oakland, Ca – this seems as if it’s a unique opportunity for the Birmingham blues community to see this artist in one of Birmingham’s premier listening

rooms.  Click on over to for the details.

Lauren Mitchell will be doing a BlueStages on August 18. As usual send an email to to reserve your spot. And it looks like we’ll have at least two more BlueStages events before the end of 2018. More info on that coming soon.

Further on out – Keb Mo is at the Alys Stephens Center on November 8 – another show I’m real excited about.  The Blues Ball is December 8th at Workplay, featuring IBC winner The Keeshea Pratt Band. And we’re still working on a Big Announcement, too, so keep your ears open…

Just a quick note to our members, including the lapsed members, – please log in and check your membership status here on the website. We’ve done our best to have everyone listed and to have everyone listed in the appropriate category with the correct membership time frame listed, but there is no doubt we’ve made at least one error and there is at least one of you that has totally fallen through the cracks.

But we’ll never know if you don’t help us out. And it just may be worth your while to be listed correctly!
