Open Mic

Time for another Open Mic at The Burly Earl this Thursday (3/27) starting at 7pm.

Obviously it’s a easy going & VERY casual event -
Plenty of opportunity to ‘sit in’ with others if that’s your thang. It’s been well attended by players/singers from beginners to really good musicians

This is early night for those who like to throw out some tuneage and get home at a decent hour. Slots are limited & can fill up early so keep that in mind

thanks
Leonard

I know open jams are usually free, butt in this case, we are “suggesting” a $5 donation at the door.  Check out the link for more info. Blues Jam for Autism

Blue Mail

Hey everybody, thanks to all who came out to the spring edition of the Junkyard Juke. We dodged the storms all day long and it turned out to be a wonderful day. I want to thank all the volunteers that helped setup, run the site and breakdown at the end. Check out pictures of the event shot by Larry Gay.

Auctions

Christie’s is auctioning some guitars.  Several Gibsons (I saw a Les Paul from 1960, a 1938 D-28 Martin, etc).  There are some Fenders as well.  The nicest guitar is a 1928 Hermann Hauser Sr.  (Wonder what it sounds like).

Also for the fiddlers in the crowd, a circa 1700 Stradivarius (the one known as “The Penny").  Expected to go for 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 (that’s dollars, not pennys).  It ain’t Ebay, but still.

BBC Paul Jones Radio

Here is a link to a webcast of Paul Jones Rhythm and Blues show from BBC.
I am not sure of the broadcast schedule.  New things and old.  I am listening to an interview with Van Morrison right now.
They are discussing the meaning of the word “entrainment”.  Quoting the Concise Oxford English Dictionary.  Huh!

From the Prez

Hey everybody, are you ready for a big Blues weekend? Bobby Rush is tonight and the JunkYard Juke will be tomorrow. There is also good music in the clubs as well. George Thorogood plays at the Alabama Theater on Sunday. If you are going to the show, check out Jim Suhler, who is the opening act. He is a great Texas style Blues guitar player.

OK…I will have to say that I have been freaking out all week about the rain expected today through tomorrow morning. The bottom line is the storms should push through and we should be fine with the weather by mid-day. We will have the event as planned.

We can always use volunteers to help set up, man the front gate and help at the membership/merchandise table. Please respond if you can help us out.

We are having a sale on MCBS t-shirts tomorrow, so bring a little extra cash for that. Also, we encourage everybody who gets Bluemail to become a member. We fly by the seat of our pants and membership dollars help us to produce quality events like the JYJ.

If you get the Birmingham News, check out the City Scene section today. Mary Colurso did a nice write-up on the MCBS. Here is the link.

Hey, Everybody!

2BLU

I have GREAT news regarding the International Blues Challenge. Our Solo/duo act 2BLU made it to the finals. They did not win, butt this is a huge honor for them to even make it that far. Congratulations go out to Bruce Andrews and George Dudley. Todd Simpson and Mojo Child put on a great show as well in the band competition, butt did not make it to the final round.

I also want to remind everybody that open jams return this month as we return to Up Top on Rocky Ridge Road on February 23rd

Open Jam for February

I also want to remind everybody that open jams return this month as we return to Up Top on Rocky Ridge Road on February 23rd.
Start time is 7:30 pm

Where is this place?  Well like this:

3325 Rocky Ridge Plz # 201
Birmingham, AL 35243-4409

It is on Rocky Ridge Road.
This road intersects 280 in the East (between 459 and Lakeshore)
and Interstate 65/Hwy 31 in the west (by way of Patton Chapel and Lorna Rd)

Here is a map:
Map of 3325 Rocky Ridge Plz Birmingham, AL 35243-4411, US

If you need more directions, here are some suggestions:

Up Top is on Rocky Ridge Road, easiest way there is to take hwy 280 east out of Birmingham and take a right on Rocky Ridge Road at the light just past Birmingham Waterworks. Its 2 miles on the right in Rocky Ridge Plaza. It’s up on the second level. There is an elevator if you gave the road crew the day off and don’t like hauling equipment up stairs yourself.

You can also take exit 17 off 459, go north on Acton Rd a quarter mile, hang a right on Old Rocky Ridge, and in another quarter hang another right on Rocky Ridge Road. then in half a mile its on the left in Rocky Ridge Plaza.

Oh, it used to be Tommy’s Up Top.  Maybe you have been there?

More directions can be found in the “read more” section:

MCBS Elections January

MCBS Elections and Birthday Party
with
Midnight Train

The Burly Earl - 7:00 p.m.
Saturday January 12, 2007
From the Prez:
Happy New Year everybody! I am looking forward to a great 2008 for the Blues in the ‘Ham. We gained a lot of momentum this past year and have made new friends and re-forged old relationships. I can’t think of a better way to start the New Year than to have a birthday party.  We will be celebrating our 15th birthday when we invade the Burly Earl on January 12. Third place winner of the Battle of Blues Bands contest Midnight Train will be the featured entertainment.

Butt that is not the only thing that will be happening that night. It is time to elect some new board members. It is important that we have a strong passionate board that will keep us moving forward. There are three open positions for the next two-year term that includes Vice-President, Treasurer and one board member-at-large. I urge everybody to get involved and step up to the plate. The seven board members can not do everything.  It is easy to burn out when a few are doing all the work. How many events we produce depends on how active the membership wants to be.
